January 23, 2 to 10:30 pm Queen Charlotte’s Birthday Ball recalls a significant moment in Toronto’s history, a ball offered by officers of the Garrison at York (Fort York) on 23 January 1817. Our event is a costumed ball recreating an early 19th century social gathering. It includes instruction in period dance, an authentic Georgian dinner, and an evening of English country dancing. Art of Peace, a dance-based performance installation by Toronto-based inter-arts company pounds per square inch, explores our relationship to peace set inside walls built for war. Stories, images, and somatic textures weave a legacy of how we fight within and throughout to claim what is ours, to find peace, and to nourish ourselves. Join us in one of Toronto’s most engaging winter spaces as we gather intimately in the warmth of the Blue Barracks at Fort York to honour and measure the cost of peace from our indigenous and immigrant-settler roots. Pick up a Kids’ Guide to Fort York and have fun finding the clues to complete its games and puzzles throughout the visit.
